Halloween masks and costumes, unusual, strange and frightening, are not only a tribute to tradition, but also a way to show your imagination by inventing and creating an original carnival image. How to make a scary mask with your own hands for Halloween? In this article we list several simple methods.

Simple cardboard mask

How to make a scary mask with your own hands from cardboard? Most easy way- cut out a mask-glasses with slits for the eyes, and then paint or decorate. This the best option for a children's masquerade look, for example, if a themed party is planned at school: a mask with glasses made of cardboard will not be too frightening or repulsive. In addition, you can do it together with your child. To do this you will need:

  • Cardboard and colored paper.
  • Glue.
  • Markers or paints for coloring.
  • Soft elastic or tape.

First of all, you need to choose an image for the future mask. A spider mask is perfect for Halloween, bat, pumpkins or a funny ghost - Casper. You can draw the mask template on cardboard yourself, or you can print it from the Internet. Then everything is simple: the cardboard template is carefully cut out, painted or decorated with elements made of colored paper. If desired, you can decorate the mask with sparkles, sequins, appliqués, etc. You will need to make holes on the sides through which the ribbon or elastic band will be threaded.

Volume mask made of cardboard

Making a regular goggle mask three-dimensional by adding parts from cardboard or papier-mâché to the product is another option for making a scary mask with your own hands (see photo below in the article). To do this you will need:

  • Draw (print) and cut out templates for the mask and volumetric elements.
  • Make papier-mâché parts, if any, in advance and dry well.
  • Glue or staple all the parts of the mask, make side holes.
  • Color the mask. If there are papier-mâché elements, they will need to be primed and dried again before painting.
  • Thread a ribbon or elastic through the side holes.

Volumetric masks: what can they be made from?

An original voluminous mask that covers the face completely or only half looks truly impressive. Creating such a product will require patience and accuracy, and will take a little longer. How to make a scary mask of this type? There are several methods available.

  1. The most common and accessible technique for making a volumetric mask is papier-mâché: gluing a product from pieces of paper.
  2. How to make a scary mask yet? Interesting option- a voluminous mask made of fabric shreds. This technology is similar to papier-mâché and allows you to show your imagination using fabric blanks of different textures and colors.
  3. The most modern, original, beautiful, but also the most expensive material for volumetric masks is plastic or polymer clay. The main condition for working with such material is strict adherence to the technology for creating the product described in the instructions.

Regardless of what material you plan to make a volumetric mask from, you will most likely have to start by making a base of plaster or plasticine.

Form-base for a mask

Why do you need a mask form? And is it possible to do without it? You can often find a description of the process of making a three-dimensional papier-mâché mask, which is made directly on the face. This method, of course, saves time, but making and drying the mask this way is not very convenient. Also, a plaster or plasticine mold can be replaced, for example, with a hockey mask or an inflated balloon.

You can make a more accurate base mold from plasticine: either sculpt the head of the character whose mask you plan to make, or make an anatomical cast of the face.

However, experienced craftsmen advise not to be lazy and make a plaster mold before making a scary mask. This base can be used several times; moreover, the plaster mold is suitable not only for working in the papier-mâché technique, but also for making plastic masks with subsequent heat treatment of the product. There are two ways to make a plaster mold:

  1. Make a face cast using cooking foil. Carefully pour plaster into the resulting form, avoiding deformation of the foil, and allow the plaster to harden. Remove the foil after drying.
  2. Another method is somewhat more complicated: make a plaster cast of the face. It will not be possible to make such a base mold yourself; you will need an assistant who will apply the plaster mass. The impression is made in the following order:
  • First you need to remove your hair under a bathing cap, fix the shape of your eyebrows with gel or wipe with a damp piece of soap and spread your face well with a rich cream (baby or Vaseline will do). Next, cocktail tubes are inserted into the nostrils (the ends of the tubes need to be wrapped in gauze or cotton wool). This will allow you to breathe freely during the procedure.
  • After all the preparations, all that remains is to sit comfortably on the floor, fixing your head with damp towels or absorbent cloth so that the plaster mass does not drip onto your clothes and onto the floor during application.
  • The assistant should quickly apply a thin layer of plaster mass, starting from the middle of the face to the edge. Liquid plaster can be replaced from a pharmacy, then they must be applied by first cutting them into pieces and soaking them in warm water.
  • Once the surface of the plaster mold has hardened, the assistant can carefully remove the impression. Finally, the shape needs to be aligned along the edges.

What materials are needed for a papier-mâché mask?

Papier-mâché, that is, modeling from “chewed paper,” is an accessible, convenient and inexpensive answer to the question “how to make a scary mask with your own hands.” To work with this technique you will need:

  • Paper sheets. Regular unnecessary magazines, newspapers, advertising leaflets, paper napkins And so on.
  • Adhesive agent. This could be PVA glue or wallpaper glue. But since the mask will come into contact with the skin of the face, it is best to prepare a paste from flour and water (at a ratio of 1:2).
  • Heavy cream or butter to lubricate the base mold. This will allow you to easily remove the finished product from the mold in the future.

Step-by-step procedure for creating a papier-mâché mask

How to make a scary one The procedure is quite simple:

  • A layer of lubricant is applied to the base mold - rich cream(Vaseline, vegetable oil).
  • Paper sheets need to be torn into small strips and soaked in a container with paste; the thicker the paper, the longer.
  • Paper strips are glued to the base layer by layer, gradually forming a mask. It is important to apply each subsequent layer evenly, without air bubbles or unevenness.
  • During the sculpting process, the mask can be secured with one or two layers of bandage or strips soft fabric, laying them between layers of paper strips.
  • Dry the mask for 2-3 days at room temperature. After drying, cut the side holes for the elastic (ribbon), align the slits for the eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • The mask must be removed from the mold, primed and painted. To paint a paper mask, regular gouache or oil paints are suitable.
  • If desired, the mask can be decorated with bright details (feathers, sequins, elements made of fabric, metal, etc.), thread an elastic band (ribbon) into the side slots.

Heat-treated plastic mask

Plastic, which hardens after heating at high temperatures, is a material very popular among people who are passionate about handicrafts. However, working with it requires strict adherence to technology and safety rules. For this reason, you should always start the process of creating a mask by reading the instructions on the packaging of the plastic. It is especially important to remember that the operating technology and processing temperature may differ for different types of this material. How to make a scary mask from polymer clay(plastics)? To create a mask from this material you will need:

  • Set of colored plastic with instructions.
  • Dishes and stack (knife) for work.
  • Container with warm water.
  • Oven (oven in a stove).
  • Plaster mold for a mask.
  • Decorative elements (optional).

Important! Thermoplastic utensils should not be used for food purposes. After use, the oven must be thoroughly rinsed with water and detergent.

Manufacturing from plastic is carried out in several stages:

  • The plaster mold is lubricated with oil or rich cream.
  • Pieces of material are softened according to the instructions on the package. For faster heating, it is often recommended to use warm water or the non-hot air of a regular hair dryer. Of these, a mask is applied to a plaster base.
  • It is important to avoid getting dust, small debris, hair or threads on the softened plastic.
  • When sculpting onto a mold, you must immediately cut out the nasal and eye holes of the mask. For a beautiful, tight fit of the mask to the face, you should try to create a smooth transition to the plaster form, eliminating the plastic mass in the eye area and along the edges of the mask.
  • All cuts, including holes for the elastic (tape), must be made before the plastic completely hardens.
  • If desired, the mask can be decorated immediately, before heat treatment, with heat-resistant parts made of metal, glass, stone and other things.
  • Heat treatment is carried out in strict accordance with the instructions: a plaster mold with a molded mask is placed in the oven, preheated to the recommended baking temperature. The product is kept in the oven for the time specified by the manufacturer, after which the mask should gradually cool in the oven.
  • Important! The oven temperature must be constantly monitored. All types of plastic can begin to melt and release toxic smoke if the temperature in the oven reaches 170-175˚C. If this happens, you need to immediately turn off the oven, open doors and windows for ventilation and leave the home until it has completely ventilated.
  • Repeated heat treatment plastics. After complete cooling, the mask can be supplemented with sculpted parts and baked again.
  • The cooled product is carefully removed from the mold. The finished mask can be primed and painted, and decorative elements can be glued on.

Masks are fun to make and even more fun to decorate. There are many masks sold in stores, but you can easily make your own. In this case, it will be possible to select the exact size and suitable form, and you won't be limited by what's on sale. Once you learn how to make simple masks, you will be able to give them an original and unique look.

Steps

Paper mask

Cut a rectangle out of paper - this will be the base of your mask. Measure the distance along your face from one temple to the other. Also measure the height of your face from your nose to your hairline. Based on the measurement results, draw a rectangle on a piece of paper and cut it out.

  • Use a measuring tape.
  • This will be the base of the mask, so it's best to use regular printer paper. Later you use nicer paper.
  • As a rule, paper masks are made in a masquerade style, so that they cover only the upper half of the face.

Fold the paper in half and draw half of the mask on it. Fold a piece of paper in half along the long edge and align the short edges. Draw half of the mask on the resulting rectangle, so that its middle coincides with the bend of the paper. Fill the entire rectangular area with the design.

Mark the holes for the eyes. Measure the distance between the inner corners of the eyes and divide it by 2. Draw a cutout for the eye at this distance from the fold of the paper. Although this cutout can be shaped into any shape, it is best to make it shaped like an almond or cat eye. Cut the holes slightly larger than your eyes to make the mask comfortable to wear.

  • For example, if the distance between the eyes is 2.5 centimeters, cut a hole 1.3 centimeters from the folded edge.
  • On at this stage You should draw a hole for one eye. When you cut it out and unfold the mask, you will end up with 2 identical cutouts!
  • It is better to measure the width and length of the eye so that the cutouts do not turn out too small.
  • Cut out the mask, including the holes for the eyes, and unfold it. Now you can move on to the next step, or attach the workpiece to a more beautiful paper and cut a mask out of it. In any case, try on the mask and make adjustments if necessary.

    • After trying on the mask, apply it to new paper, trace and cut out.
    • If you are making a mask from more colorful paper, do not fold it.
    • Cut out holes for the eyes using a craft knife. Do not forget to place a cutting mat under the mask.
  • Place the mask on the cardboard, trace and cut it out. Although this is not necessary, it will give you a thicker, more durable mask. Simply place the paper blank on the cardboard and trace it, then cut out the mask from the cardboard (don't forget about the slits for the eyes).

    • Do not bend the cardboard. Just unbend paper mask, place it on cardboard and trace around the edges.
  • Glue the cardboard to the back of the mask. Using a brush, apply a thin layer of liquid glue to the cardboard, and then press the paper mask on top. Smooth out the folds and wait for the glue to dry.

    • You can also use an adhesive stick, but it has a weaker hold and the mask will most likely come unglued over time.
    • To make the mask look neater, do not apply glue to the left and right edges (step back about 1.3 centimeters from the edges). You will attach a ribbon to these edges.
    • Skip this step if you did not cut the mask out of cardboard.
  • Bend the mask over the edge of the table. Place the mask on the edge of the table with the paper facing up, press the center of the mask with your palm and pull on the protruding edge so that it bends.

    • Do the same with the other end of the mask.
    • This will give the mask a slight curve, making it more comfortable to wear. You can simply bend the edges of the mask.
  • Decorate the mask if desired. At this stage, you can give free rein to your imagination. A simple mask can be painted gold or silver permanent marker. A more sophisticated mask can be decorated with glue with sparkles or rhinestones. Choose a color that is fairly contrasting. Gold and silver tones work best, although you can paint the mask white and black. Below are some ideas on how to decorate your mask:

    • outline the edges of the mask and the cutouts for the eyes with glitter glue or 3D paint;
    • stick rhinestones and sparkles on the mask;
    • using hot glue, attach several long feathers to the right or left corner of the mask;
    • Apply hot glue to the edges of the mask;
    • To give the mask some relief, glue lace onto it and then decorate it with glitter fringe.
  • Do this with the left and right side mask the holes and thread the tape through them. Take a hole punch and make a hole on the left end of the mask. Thread a ribbon through the hole and tie it. Then do the same from the right end of the mask.

    • The bands should be long enough to cover the head. Two ribbons, each 55 centimeters long, will be enough.
    • Make sure the ribbon matches the color of your mask. For example, if you used a lot of gold tones when decorating your mask, choose gold ribbon.
    • If you left about 1.3 centimeters of glue free around the edges of the mask, make holes only in the cardboard and leave the outer layer of paper untouched.
  • If you want to hold the mask in your hand, glue the stick to it using hot glue. Take a pin 30–36 centimeters long. If desired, apply spray or acrylic paint and wait until it dries. After that, glue the top end of the pin to the left or right edge of the mask using hot glue.

    • To further decorate the handle, wrap it in ribbon, just like you do with candy canes. Glue both ends of the tape to the handle using hot glue.
    • If you are left-handed, glue the handle to the left, and if you are right-handed, to the right edge of the mask.
    • If you can't find a pin that fits, roll a piece of paper into a thin tube and tape the ends together to prevent it from unraveling.
    • Attach a ribbon or handle to the mask. Don't do both at the same time.

    Foil based mask

    1. Stack 8 to 10 sheets of aluminum foil together to make a fairly thick stack. Cut 8-10 approximately equal sheets of aluminum foil. They should be large enough to completely cover your face. Place these sheets together and press them down.

    2. Place the foil over your face and smooth it out so it adheres to your skin. Take a stack of sheets of foil and place it on your face. Gently press the foil over your nose, mouth and eyes, and along the sides of your face. The foil should follow the contours of your face.

      • The mask should cover your entire face, from your hairline to your chin.
    3. Cut out holes for the eyes and edges of the mask. There should be dents in the foil where the eyes were. If they are not noticeable, apply the foil to your face again, feel your eyes with your fingers and mark their location with a permanent marker. Be sure to also trim off any excess foil around the edges of the mask.

      • The mask can cover the entire face or part of it. For example, a half mask can cover the face from the nose to the forehead.
      • Aluminum foil can dull scissors, so use old or cheap scissors at this stage that you won't be afraid of ruining.
    4. Cut slits in the folded areas, place them on top of each other and secure with tape. Cut 2.5 cm long slits on each side of the forehead. Place them on top of each other to create a folded edge and secure them together with masking tape. If you are making a mask for your entire face, repeat the same for your chin.

      • The more slits you overlap, the more curved the mask will be.
      • At this point, it is good to tape the other cut edges, including the eye holes, with tape. This will make it more comfortable for you to wear the mask.
    5. Apply 3 layers of papier-mâché to the mask. Mix glue (or flour) and water in equal proportions, then cut the newsprint into thin strips. Soak the paper strips in the prepared paste, place them on the mask and smooth them out. Place the first 2 layers of paper on top of each other, wait until they dry (this will take 20-60 minutes), then apply the third layer. Wait until the last layer dries.

      • Cut the newsprint into strips 2.5–5 centimeters wide and 7.5–10 centimeters long. Apply small strips to smaller areas, such as the nose. Larger strips can be used for wide areas such as the forehead.
      • Be sure to fold the strips of paper over the edges of the mask, including into the eye holes, to avoid scratches on the aluminum foil.
      • Instead, you can cover the mask with a plaster or adhesive bandage. Cut the patch into strips and moisten them if necessary. You only need two coats.
      • To give the mask a neater look, cover the inside surface of the foil with one layer of papier-mâché. Do this after the outer layers of the paper have dried.

  • New Year's holidays, carnivals and masquerades are an opportunity to have a wonderful, fun and bright time. It will be interesting for both children and adults to participate in entertaining costumed events. However, for any holiday it is necessary to select some image, come up with and create an appropriate costume and its components. You can dress up as anyone, choosing a character you like, depending on the theme or direction of the holiday. But carnival or New Year masks have always been and will be an invariable attribute of any masquerade.

Beautiful masks sometimes don’t even require any costume, being a completely independent accessory that can convey the idea and meaning of your image. If you want the holiday to be remembered as an interesting event, turn the preparation for it into an exciting one creative process and create Carnival masks with your own hands together with the children.

If you are preparing for a masquerade

Merry celebrations have always been unthinkable without masks. Of course, they all differ from each other: for example, Christmas or New Year masks can symbolize fairy-tale heroes, participants of the Vertep, thematic winter characters, and Halloween carnivals should already reflect the spirit of this holiday and embody its popular images. If we talk about the Venetian holiday, then there is generally a whole separate art, etc. That is, if you wish, you can learn how to create beautiful and frightening, small and large, simple and complex masks: from papier-mâché, cardboard, fabric, lace or knitted and any others.

Before you make a carnival mask with your own hands, you need to decide on your image and costume. Then she will simply continue and complement it. If you want to limit yourself to just this accessory, you will have to put in more effort, because in this case it becomes the central and main detail of your image, defining it.

Minimum effort for a spectacular look

The easiest way is to make a simple mask from scrap materials: paper, lace, felt, etc. This DIY carnival mask can be suitable for both children and adults. By the way, they come not only for women, but also for men.

Let us dwell in more detail on paper and fabric masks for children. If a child cannot decide on an image for New Year's party, choosing between a tiger, an owlet and a dragon, and you don’t know how and which one to make New Year's mask, you can fulfill all his wishes at once using absolutely simple manufacturing technology.

    1. You need to print (using a color printer) the blanks that you like. This can be a drawing template of the head of any animal, fairy tale character or hero.
    2. Next, this drawing needs to be cut out and glued onto cardboard (thick paper).
    3. The New Year's mask can be held on with an elastic band. To attach it, make small cuts on both sides. Then you will need to wrap an elastic band around these slits (calculate its length so that you can easily put on the mask without tearing it, but also so that it does not constantly fall off your face). You can secure the elastic with tape or a stapler. If you want, instead of an elastic band, glue a thin stick that you can use to hold the product with your hand.
    4. This DIY New Year's mask will become even more attractive if you decorate it with sparkles, tinsel or other holiday paraphernalia.

Just as easy as making a New Year's mask for a child, you can make one for an adult party.

    • As a blank, you will need to draw or also print a regular outline (they can be either female or male). Draw two blanks at once - from regular paper or cardboard and from very thick paper.

    • Then cut out the blanks. Don't forget the eye holes.

    • When everything is ready, glue both pieces together.

    • Now it's time for decorations. Colored feathers will look very impressive. Try covering the product thickly with them, and attach sequins and rhinestones around the eye holes.

Black lace masks are very beautiful and mysterious. Their manufacturing technology is similar to the previous ones.

    1. Prepare a regular template (draw or print). Cut it out of cardboard.
    2. Take satin fabric and glue the blank to it. After the glue has dried, carefully cut out.
    3. Next, start gluing the lace, slowly cutting off all the excess. The mask should be completely covered with lace. If there are small gaps anywhere, use black nail polish to close them.
    4. Then the lace product can be decorated with sequins, rhinestones and sparkles, and a stick or elastic band can be attached to it.

A lace black mask can be made from just lace, but to do this you will need to find thick lace that will hold its shape. Then you will have to work a little with the joining of parts and bends, gluing all the elements or stitching them, and at the end - decorate the product.

Felt masks are also cut out from paper blanks.

If you are ready to do anything for the sake of an image...

Much more effort will be required if you want to make a voluminous product from papier-mâché. You can model it on a plasticine model. Despite the somewhat laborious nature of this manufacturing process, the masks turn out to be very beautiful, impressive and more durable. In addition, you can give the accessory the exact desired shape.

You can also make a mask from modeling dough (sometimes called modeling dough) using a regular paper blank. When you cut out a layer of dough, you will have to place it on a plastic mold in the shape of a face so that the future mask can dry (before this happens, you must remember to make holes in the product for the rope). Then you can paint it, make patterns on it, decorate it with crystals, rhinestones or feathers.

Nothing accentuates a New Year's look more than a themed carnival mask. And instead of purchasing standard accessories in a store, you can emphasize your individuality - and complement your outfit with a homemade mask.

It doesn’t take much time to create them, and you can use different materials as a base.

We suggest making carnival masks with your own hands using paper templates - and decorating them with paints, bright feathers, sparkles, beads and other details.

Themed masks are suitable for both adults and children, and thanks to the wide variety of options, you will definitely look bright in New Year's Eve and on other holidays.

Using papier-mâché material, you can make any figures for masquerade costumes, masks, as well as room decor elements. In this article you will learn how to make your own papier-mâché mask. Depending on the occasion (Halloween, masquerade ball) and your imagination, you can give the mask any shape or make an image of your favorite character.

    Materials for a papier-mâché mask

Before starting work, this is especially important for beginners, it is worth remembering a number of features. By following the basic principles of working with the material, you can make a beautiful mask. So, one of the main materials in this technique is paper. It is necessary to use newsprint, although in some cases thin paper napkins are used for the first 2-3 layers. Napkins shrink when wet, which forms folds and wrinkles on the finished product after drying. This is just right for some types of masks, for example, Baba Yaga. The paper cannot be cut, but must be torn with your hands. The edges of the torn paper are thin, which allows you to form a smooth product.

The finished mask can be decorated only after the material has dried. Papier-mâché hardens in about 2 days. Drying time depends on the size and thickness of the mask. When it comes to the base for the mask, there are several options. If you have simple mask According to the shape of the face, the task is simplified. Just before applying the material, lubricate or wrap the surface of the mask with film. This is done to prevent the material from sticking to the mold.

You can also use balloon. Subsequently, it is very convenient to remove it - the ball breaks itself when the material dries.

There is another option - forming the base for a mask from foil. To do this, fold the foil in several layers and apply it to the face. Now you need to use your fingers to give the foil the shape of a face, in other words, we make a cast.

We remove the finished base for the mask, then correct the unevenness and cut out holes for the eyes and nose.

You can adjust the shape using plasticine. This type of base also requires lubrication.

Technique for making a papier-mâché mask

In order to make a mask, you will need the following materials:

    • mask mold;
    • paper;
    • glue;
    • brush;
    • paints and other mask decorative elements.

The paper must be torn into strips, their sizes depend on the size finished product. For a standard mask you will need pieces 2-2.5 cm wide and 8-10 cm long.

Now you need to prepare the glue. You can use regular PVA glue or wallpaper glue. At home, paste is most often prepared. To do this, mix half a glass of flour or starch with a glass of cold water. The composition must be mixed until smooth. When there are no lumps left, pour the mixture into a pan of hot water. There should be about 5 glasses of water. Cook the glue until it thickens, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Cooking time is approximately 2-3 minutes. After cooling, the glue is ready for use.

Now you can make the mask itself. Apply a layer of paper soaked in water to the prepared form. One layer is enough.

Then dip pieces of paper into glue and apply to the mold.

Make 2-3 layers, smooth out the paper, removing air and smoothing out unevenness, and leave to dry. Then you can continue laying out the remaining layers.

Make the mask thick enough so that it is dense and strong. The last layer can be made from thick white paper or pieces of cotton fabric.

The holes in the mask for the eyes and nose, if they have not been made previously, must be made at this stage, while the mass is wet.

The same applies to the holes for the ribbons.

The finished mask dries in about 1.5-2 days.

Now you can start designing the finished mask. First you need to align the edges. File them down with sandpaper or a file and smooth them out. You can seal the edges with masking tape. The mask itself can also be adjusted using sandpaper.

Now it's time to apply the primer. For this, water-based paint or water-based putty is used. It must be applied with a brush. If several layers are required, then each subsequent one is applied after the previous one has dried.

After drying, you can start decorating the finished mask. For drawing you can use gouache or acrylic paint. The base tone is easier to apply foam sponge, and it is more convenient to paint small details and patterns with a thin synthetic brush. Rhinestones, sparkles, small chains, beads, braid and lace are most often used for decoration. Decorative elements are attached with glue or small sewing pins. Venetian masks are often covered with velvet fabric. It will be enough to paint the Halloween mask with colored paints.
